How to Use Your Health Insurance at a Bangkok Hospital
Before You Go: Know Your Card and Your Hospital
Your Allianz Ayudhya insurance card is your most important document at a Thai hospital. Keep it in your wallet — alongside a photo of your policy number.
In-network vs. out-of-network hospitals matter:
- In-network (direct billing hospitals): You pay nothing upfront for covered treatment. The hospital bills Allianz directly.
- Out-of-network: You pay first, then claim reimbursement. Still covered, but requires paperwork.
I always help clients identify the closest in-network hospital to their home and workplace before they ever need it.
At the Hospital: Step by Step
Step 1 — Go to the International or Insurance Desk
Bangkok's major private hospitals all have dedicated international or insurance desks — often right at the main entrance. Go there first, not to the general reception queue.
Tell them:
- You have Allianz Ayudhya insurance
- Show your insurance card
- Provide your policy number
They will call Allianz directly to verify your coverage and get pre-authorisation for treatment.
Step 2 — Pre-Authorisation
For planned admissions (surgery, procedures), pre-authorisation is required before treatment begins. The hospital handles this call with Allianz — you don't need to do it yourself.
For emergencies, pre-authorisation happens as soon as you're stable. You or a family member should notify Allianz within 24 hours of an emergency admission.
My tip: Save the Allianz Ayudhya claims hotline in your phone: I'll give this to every client when we set up their policy.
Step 3 — Treatment
Once authorised, you receive treatment as normal. The in-network hospital tracks everything that's covered by your policy separately from anything that's not.
Step 4 — Discharge
At discharge, the hospital presents a bill split into two parts:
- Covered by insurance — Allianz pays this directly
- Your responsibility — co-pays, non-covered items, room upgrades if you chose a higher tier than your plan covers
You only pay the second portion.
Claiming Reimbursement (Out-of-Network or Emergency)
If you went to a hospital outside the Allianz network, you'll need to claim reimbursement:
Documents you need:
- Original hospital receipts (not photocopies)
- Doctor's letter or medical certificate
- Completed Allianz claim form
- Copy of your passport / ID
- Bank details for reimbursement transfer
Timeline: Submit within 90 days of treatment. Reimbursement typically takes 7–14 business days once documents are complete.
I help every client I work with to gather documents and submit claims correctly — this is where having a personal advisor makes a real difference.
Common Mistakes at Thai Hospitals
Not going to the insurance desk first If you check in through general admission and the hospital processes you as a self-pay patient, unwinding it later is time-consuming.
Forgetting your insurance card Without the card, the hospital may ask you to pay upfront and claim later. Always carry it.
Choosing a room above your plan's limit If your plan covers a standard private room but you choose a suite, you pay the difference. Ask the nurse to show you what room tier your plan covers.
Not calling your advisor Call me. That's what I'm here for — especially in stressful situations.
